From Apartment Living to Retirement Village: Nancy's move to Woolooware Shores

2 October 2025

For Nancy, the decision to move to Woolooware Shores came after a long journey of downsizing, readjusting, and ultimately recognising the importance of community, convenience, and care.

“I’ve been living at Woolooware Shores for two months,” Nancy shares. “My brother and sister-in-law moved here in 2007 and every time I visited, I used to say, ‘I could live here.’”

Nancy and her husband had spent 43 years in their much-loved family home in Pennhurst – a three-level property with plenty of stairs. As time went on, the challenges of maintaining a large house and navigating stairs with knee replacements became too much. The couple decided to “downsize” into an apartment at Wentworth Point.

But as Nancy reflects, it wasn’t much of a downsize. “We didn’t really downsize, we just took everything to Wentworth Point. After my husband died, I decided that I needed to move on.”

Life in the apartment had its conveniences at first, but over time it became increasingly isolated. Wentworth Point’s rapid growth brought more high-rise buildings, heavier traffic, and limited access in and out.

“Wentworth Point was good to start with, but it was getting busier and busier. There was only one road in, one road out, and traffic was getting very heavy,” Nancy says.

While she had some friendly neighbours, she admits she never truly felt connected. “Living in the apartment, it was just me. Here, I feel secure. Everyone’s very friendly – everyone talks to everybody. It’s not hard to find a friend.”

The turning point came when Nancy considered her future needs. “It was all the ongoing care that persuaded me to move here. Just a stroll across the road, I’ve been able to access the doctor, nurses, podiatry, hairdressing – and of course, a little bit further up the road is the Watercress Café where I meet my friends.”

Left: The care, on-site facilities and the community at Woolooware Shores has made a positive impact on Nancy's life.
Right: She brought cacti from her apartment to her spacious balcony in her new home.

At Woolooware Shores, Nancy has already enjoyed social gatherings like Christmas in July and breakfast with the pastoral team. She’s also making use of the maintenance support that comes with village life. “It’s just a phone call or using the app, and along they come. They’ve been hanging pictures and fixing things that needed attention. It’s very helpful.”

For Nancy, the move has opened up a new chapter filled with opportunities to stay active and engaged. “I’m looking forward to joining a lot of exercise activities and making a whole lot of new friends. Soon as I get settled, I’ll venture out more and go along to a few of the clubs here.”

Looking back, Nancy has no regrets about choosing Woolooware Shores as her home, along with her collection of cacti. Her advice to others who may be uncertain about leaving apartment living behind is simple: “Don’t hesitate. All the assistance you could need is here – from shopping to medical attention. It makes life so much easier.”

For Nancy, downsizing wasn’t just about reducing space – it was about finding the right fit for her lifestyle and future. At Woolooware Shores, she’s discovered not only convenience and care, but also a warm, welcoming community that makes every day brighter.
